Extension ACTIVITY- 4th Grade
Trina won the Caldecott for her work in this book.
Let's study and learn about why she won.
Answer the questions below to help you learn about her style of work.
Next, it will be your turn to create some artwork in Trina's style!
Trina is known for her work with pen and ink, and a special style of watercolor paint called Gouache.
Do you know what that word means?
Activities:
Learn about a new word:
Look it up in the dictionary, then come back to this page.
Did you find out that it was a thicker style of watercolor paint?
Studying the book:
Study the front cover of the book. How many colors do you see? Do you see where she has used pen and ink on the cover? Find two more pages in the book that you can see her use of pen and ink.
Write the page numbers down.
Next, lets look at each page. Take a look at the borders on each page. What do you see in them? Write down what things you see in them.
Next look at two more pages that have borders. Are these the same as the first page? If different, write down what other things you see.
Did you learn that she put images in her border that had to do with the action on that page? Is that true on the other pages too?
Art Extension: YOU are the illustrator
Directions:
Gather a pen (black ink), water color paper, a brush, watercolors, and a pencil and ruler. Then pick out a favorite fairy tale book.
1. Draw a rectangle using your ruler. Make your rectangle 8" X 12" on your watercolor paper.
2. Draw a border inside of that line, to create your artwork space, just like Trina has. Leave enough space to draw in.
3. Look at your favorite fairytale book. Thinking about how Trina used figures and plants and animals in her border, create a border for your fairy tale book like the cover on St George and the Dragon.
Draw first in pencil, then mark over your work in pen.
4. Next draw a picture of the main character or an action scene from your book. Draw in pencil first, then pen.
5. Color your page with watercolor paints.
Put the title on your book.
Put your name on the book as illustrator!
Take your time and have fun!
Reflections: Was it hard to make your one page? Was it difficult to work with water color?
Did it take you longer than you thought to make your page?
Would you like to be an illustrator? What would you need to learn to do?
